Fucking EROS.
In search of a +1
There’s an invite-only performance art piece happening.
The piece is about sex. It’s a live sex show. It’s never been done before.
Well, according to chat GPT there are approximately 1500 live sex shows happening globally everyday. But these are all paid for, and mostly in Thailand.
This ones for free. It’s very exclusive. But not in a Soho nightclub kind of way.
Entry isn’t for finance bros or the highest bidder. In fact there’s no money involved at all.
Imagine Bonnie Blue as a not for profit performance artist.
Except don’t.
Just stop imagining Bonnie Blue.
Stop imagining the number of men, the morning tv interviews, Cat Deeley’s face-the face of a 48 year old woman wincing—the same face you make when your friends say they think shes cool. I digress.
That’s how easy it is to degrade and capitalise sex. Unconsciously. That’s how deep it goes.
Anyway, this is different. Yes, it’s a live sex show.
But what if sex was about complete intimacy, desire, pleasure, creation, autonomy, consent and power.
Have you ever seen sex like that?
It’s a raw, authentic conversation piece— for sure? (?)
Also, it’s performance art. It’s fucking EROS.
The show is literally called fucking Eros. Or just Eros I can’t remember.
Eros was the Greek god of love and sex.
When Freud wrote about the Pleasure Principle- the ruling forces of human behaviour, the life and death drives, he coined them Eros and Thanatos.
Why did he choose Eros? Why did he not choose from the myriad of Greek gods and goddesses symbolic of life? Gaia, Hebe, even Aphrodite.
Because Freud knew that life force was about finding the will to live, survive and create.
Through Eros we connect and preserve; we meet our urges for not just survival but even pleasure.
This is why we accuse Freud of being perverse, even though he invented the theories on sexuality that allow us the freedom to do so.
So if you feel like you’ve lost your creativity, are surviving more than living or —hey— even misplaced the will to live.
This could maybe do something.
Also, it’s only performance art.
It’s curated by this young female director of a major contemporary art gallery and a former creative director turned psychoanalytic researcher. There’s an iconic line up of speakers in-between each performance.
Poets, Feminist writers, the VP of ethics for a major porn platform, art critics.
It’s legit.
The gallery obviously wouldn’t host it for legal reasons so it’s at a secret location that we find out on the day.
Someone said it’s in the hall of an old mansion and it’s set up like a cabaret with dinner tables and a lighting design. The actual fucking happens behind a two way mirror to allow the performers to feel more intimate.
Anyway it’s really tasteful, actually some up and coming chef is doing the canapés menus and they’re “themed”.
The vibe is seated drinks with jazz music, speakers and then as many performances as 2 hours can hold.
There will be several couples, a few solo performers and the possibility of a third.
They are there to be as raw, authentic, intimate and honest as they possibly can in as long as it takes them to do that. They’re autonomous objects.
Each performer has consented, been psychologically assessed and understands the implications of their involvement, there’s no payment and no one involved profits financially.
Do you think they’re being exploited?
Every audience member has their phones taken away. It’s so the performers feel safe.
But also.. if you want to come you have to sign an NDA.
Apparently the theory is that it will “subjectify” the experience. Each person creates something new impossibly shaped by themselves and their experience. Also it’s a commentary on object relations theory.
Apparently it’s part of some wider survey into psychoanalysis and sex and creative fields. Anyway it sounds cool, I’d give up my phone and legal rights to freedom of speech to check it out.
You lose a hundred percent of the shots you don’t take right? Even if some shots are traumatising.
It’s an experience. It’s all for the bit.
Anyway I’m going, I’m going to dress fabulously. Mysteriously but powerfully.
I’m searching for a shoe that conveys control to the patriarchy whilst being comfortable enough to wear out.
I don’t know, this should probably have been a voice note.
But basically, do you want to be my plus 1?
